ANIMALS UNDER THE FLOORBOARDS Sometimes I think I never will Get mad enough to make me kill All the animals under the floorboards that keep me up all night Once I had another Mind That made me neither cruel nor kind And I wonder now: are they my family As I go in and out of dreams I think I understand their little sounds

CASTLE IN THE SNOW Castle in the snow Caught a fox by the toe Told me everything she knows I won’t starve anymore Free as a whale, I travelled five-thousand miles Through caves and ice, shedding blood, sweat, and smiles To make right a wrong turn is almost too much to bear because Who knows what might follow Follow my footprints in the sand Castle in the snow Caught a fox by the toe Told me everything she knows I won’t starve anymore On the ground outside was the rest of an animal A family of wolves somewhere is happy and full

THE WAY YOU WALK AWAY From the garden I watch the leaves in the wind For no reason I check the time on my phone Oh, but I never got a chance to tell you when you left for work I love the way you walk away Footsteps that stain my mind The feeling you leave behind The way that you walk away From the window I count the cars going by You shine the moonlight and my freckles are the stars all around Oh, and I never got a chance to tell you before we fell asleep I love the way you walk away Footsteps that stain my mind The feeling you leave behind The way that you walk away The ribbon in your hair that I can almost hear (I am on to you) As the day grows long your shadow stretches near, and tells me every secret again (I’m right behind you) I love the way you walk away Footsteps that stain my mind The feeling you leave behind The way that you walk away

Africa 05:22
AFRICA High and Dry from North to South We have to hunt or go without Rain or Shine from coast to coast You got the things that I love the most A place that I’ve never been to A place I might never go A place that I’d love to see, but Who wants to ruin the mystery Oh, no Africa, it’s a long way to your shore The sun shines down on a desert plain It’s getting hot today We worship the sky and pray for rain It’s getting hot While a tiger sleeps in a buzzard nest You got the things that I love the best A place that I’ve never been to A place I might never go A place that I’d love to see, but Who wants to ruin the mystery Oh, no Africa, it’s a long way to your shore I swam out far as I can go Watching the clouds watch me below I got so far I can’t see the land Turn right back when I realize A place that I’ve never been to A place I might never go A place that I’d love to see, but Who wants to ruin the mystery Oh, no Africa, it’s a long way to your shore

Seen It All 04:35
SEEN IT ALL Can you love if you can’t be there Can you care if you can’t be anywhere Should you speak if you haven’t found your voice Do you have to choose if you’re fine with either choice The more I ask around I find the questions never end Do you have to start if you don’t know where to begin Can you love if you can’t be there Do you get the vibrations that I send you through the atmosphere I got so old. I think I’ve seen it all You shoot me down, so I crawl across the floor I’ve been so bored, I thought I’d seen it all But I hear your voice and I crawl across the floor You can see when you close your eyes And mysteries can reach you through the darkness sometimes What makes you proud of a waving flag My father said: You know that everyone’s awake when they’re not asleep In every other land You would sing but you don’t know how You would leave but it’s just impossible now You don’t care if they told you so You think you don’t have to learn what you already know I got so old. I think I’ve seen it all You shoot me down, so I crawl across the floor I’ve been so bored, I thought I’d seen it all But I hear your voice and I crawl across the floor

Never Found 04:12
NEVER FOUND It’s the legs of a scorpion And the rays of a setting sun I can feel it when I’m almost there As it captures my attention If I sense it on a foggy night Well, I might lose it in the moonlight It’s the real me peeking in Help me find the never found It’s in the sky and in the ground When there’s no clues been left for us Help me find the never found As elusive as a snake in the grass It isn’t happiness It’s the same in other parts of the world When you’re dancing with a stranger And how long, I wonder, will it last And do I really have to learn the hard way, every time Do I really have to learn the hard way It’s the real me peeking in Help me find the never found It’s in the sky and in the ground When there’s no clues been left for us Help me find the never found

Last Summer 04:46
LAST SUMMER Last summer I saw someone come out of the woods He stared at me, so I just stared at him as hard as I could His eyes looked like they were asking me And then he just turned away But then last weekend I finally thought of something to say

SORCERESS (ONE NIGHT STAND) One time is OK, but what if I wake up here again Well, everything was just fine, but I don’t know how I got here... Or when... Can you show me the way out of here? I took a trail down through the hills You wouldn’t believe what I had to kill And then you tell me you love the sound of the desert wind I know what I have to do: go back out and get it for you The first day was alright, but I didn’t know if I’d make it through the night The sound of wolves are ringing in my ears and someone told me they can smell your fear... Well, can they? Can you show me the way out of here? I took a trail down through the hills You wouldn’t believe what I had to kill And then you tell me you love the sound of the desert wind I know what I have to do: go back out and get it for you

The Last One 06:00
THE LAST ONE I tried to draw your face, soo I traced the flowing lines The picture’s a disgrace, but I’m sure to make you mine now I followed you all day, but I stayed two steps behind You wave the boys away, but I’m sure to make you mine now I’ll be the last one... and I’ll be the lasting one We gather at your feet, and we worship in a line We pander and compete, but I’m sure to make you mine now I’ll be the last one, but I’ll be the lasting one I guess I’ll stay here behind the scenes I can’t stand to just sit, not waiting patiently So just make your way down the line And I’ll be the last one... I’ll be the lasting one I chased you all day long, but I stayed two steps behind Each turn we took was wrong, but I’m sure to make you mine now And I’ll be the last one... I’ll be the lasting one

LANGUAGE FOR HER I saw a map in the lines of her hands and now I’m following Or maybe I’m just wondering if I can make a home in her heart I smelled the sea in the waves of her hair and now I’m remembering When we stood there shivering the first time that we swam in the dark Now every time that I watch the moon replace the old sun in the sky That I stand and watch the waves grow higher and higher I think everything’s just a word in a language for her I felt the sun in the heat from her skin and now I’m wondering Are these ice caps dripping all around us as we lie in her bed I saw her thoughts in a lost flock of geese, they were gathering Preparing for winter wandering, there, beneath that grey Autumn sky Now every time that I watch the moon replace the old sun in the sky That I stand and watch the waves grow higher and higher I think everything’s just a word in a language for her When she’s around all my thoughts quiet down I saw the world in the rounds of her eyes

DRIFTIN ON A CLOUD Was it just a dream... does anything we did mean anything I think the sky was clear the day you passed away Why do I see you smiling through the pouring rain Are you still the same if your face is different but you keep your name I heard it was silent all around the Dead Sea Isn’t it insane that I hear your voice in the cicadas’ cry Looking out the window at the rusted rails I just pretend our story was a fairy tale I heard it was silent all around the Dead Sea Driftin’ on a cloud...

about

Here's the story of Near Equator, which took about 2 years to finish:

While the members of Fancy Colors toured the world with various artists like Regina Spektor, of Montreal, Sondre Lerche, Vetiver, CHAPPO, and Jupiter One, the musicians worked at home when they could.

From songwriter Zac Colwell:

"It happened one wintery night as I was drifting off to sleep, listening to the critters under the floorboards of the house I live in in Brooklyn.

"It was about 3 am and I was in the twilight state. The critters were scratching and snoring, and as it turns out, dreaming.

"I finally managed to get to sleep on the uncomfortable futon. As I drifted off I had the most powerful sensation of being pulled into the floor. (Having had the experience as a kid of being woken up from a concussion, I can say here was a similar feeling, but in reverse.) I opened my eyes in my dream and saw something I've never seen in life.

"This album is an attempt to evoke some of that experience.

"After a lot of reflection I realized weeks later that somehow my psyche had melted with the critters' and I experienced some of their dreams. Sometimes I appeared in them, as they had been watching me. My influence was there as well, and we dreamed together as one mind.

"I don't know how this happened and it hasn't happened since. Perhaps it has something to do with the magic spells my girlfriend mutters in her sleep. She doesn't know about this.

"This album is an attempt to capture some of what I remember of the mixture of the dreams."

Colwell insists on talking about the music in unconventional terms. Describing the mood of the album, he mentions a "Buddhist hallucination", or "the memory of an experience, rather than the real experience".

The group is currently working on new material while performing in their current residence of Brooklyn, New York.

The album was released on Sandolyn Records in September 2012 in time for a national tour supporting Sondre Lerche. Fancy Colors also served as Mr. Lerche's backing band on the tour.
