about

Here's the story of Near Equator, which took about 2 years to finish:

While the members of Fancy Colors toured the world with various artists like Regina Spektor, of Montreal, Sondre Lerche, Vetiver, CHAPPO, and Jupiter One, the musicians worked at home when they could.

From songwriter Zac Colwell:

"It happened one wintery night as I was drifting off to sleep, listening to the critters under the floorboards of the house I live in in Brooklyn.

"It was about 3 am and I was in the twilight state. The critters were scratching and snoring, and as it turns out, dreaming.

"I finally managed to get to sleep on the uncomfortable futon. As I drifted off I had the most powerful sensation of being pulled into the floor. (Having had the experience as a kid of being woken up from a concussion, I can say here was a similar feeling, but in reverse.) I opened my eyes in my dream and saw something I've never seen in life.

"This album is an attempt to evoke some of that experience.

"After a lot of reflection I realized weeks later that somehow my psyche had melted with the critters' and I experienced some of their dreams. Sometimes I appeared in them, as they had been watching me. My influence was there as well, and we dreamed together as one mind.

"I don't know how this happened and it hasn't happened since. Perhaps it has something to do with the magic spells my girlfriend mutters in her sleep. She doesn't know about this.

"This album is an attempt to capture some of what I remember of the mixture of the dreams."

Colwell insists on talking about the music in unconventional terms. Describing the mood of the album, he mentions a "Buddhist hallucination", or "the memory of an experience, rather than the real experience".

The group is currently working on new material while performing in their current residence of Brooklyn, New York.

The album was released on Sandolyn Records in September 2012 in time for a national tour supporting Sondre Lerche. Fancy Colors also served as Mr. Lerche's backing band on the tour.

lyrics

LANGUAGE FOR HER
I saw a map in the lines of her hands and now I’m following
Or maybe I’m just wondering if I can make a home in her heart
I smelled the sea in the waves of her hair and now I’m remembering
When we stood there shivering the first time that
we swam in the dark
Now every time that I watch the moon replace the old sun in the sky
That I stand and watch the waves grow higher and higher
I think everything’s just a word in a language for her
I felt the sun in the heat from her skin and now I’m wondering
Are these ice caps dripping all around us as we lie in her bed
I saw her thoughts in a lost flock of geese, they were gathering
Preparing for winter wandering, there, beneath that grey Autumn sky
Now every time that I watch the moon replace the old sun in the sky
That I stand and watch the waves grow higher and higher
I think everything’s just a word in a language for her
When she’s around all my thoughts quiet down
I saw the world in the rounds of her eyes
